CAT-6 vs CAT-6A: What Changes and When the Upgrade Is Worth It

CAT-6A costs more, is thicker, harder to pull, and takes longer to terminate. So the question every project faces is whether the upgrade is justified or whether CAT-6 will comfortably do the job. The honest answer depends on distance and on how long the cabling has to last.

The Core Difference

Alien Crosstalk — The Real Reason 6A Exists

Ordinary crosstalk happens between pairs inside the same cable. Alien crosstalk happens between adjacent cables bundled together — and at 10 Gbps it becomes the limiting factor.

CAT-6A is built to control it, usually through thicker insulation, tighter twists, a separator inside the cable, or shielding. That is why CAT-6A is physically bigger: the extra size is doing a job.

This also explains a common field surprise. A single CAT-6 run may test fine at 10 Gbps, but the same cable bundled tightly with twenty others in a tray behaves very differently. Lab performance is not bundle performance.

When CAT-6 Is Enough

  • Standard office desktops running at 1 Gbps
  • IP camera installations where each camera needs far less than 1 Gbps
  • Short runs where 10 Gbps is genuinely not planned
  • Budget-constrained projects with short expected life or planned refurbishment

When to Go CAT-6A

  • Wireless access point backhaul — modern APs push serious throughput and often need more than 1 Gbps uplink
  • Data centre and server room horizontal runs
  • Long horizontal runs where 10 Gbps must work at full distance
  • New buildings where cabling has to last 10-15 years and re-cabling later would be disruptive
  • Dense cable bundles in trays and risers, where alien crosstalk matters
  • High-power PoE — thicker conductors handle heat better in bundles

That last point is increasingly the deciding factor. As PoE power levels have risen to feed cameras, access points, and displays, heat inside a tightly packed bundle becomes a real design constraint. Larger conductors dissipate it better.

The Installation Costs People Forget

The cable price difference is only part of the story. CAT-6A also means:

  • Larger conduits and trays, or fewer cables per existing pathway
  • Bigger bend radius, which affects tight corners and panel dressing
  • Longer termination time, particularly with shielded variants
  • Shielded versions require proper bonding and earthing throughout — done badly, shielding performs worse than unshielded
  • Matching components — patch panels, keystones, and patch cords must all be rated to the same category or the channel drops to the lowest-rated part

That last item causes more failed certifications than the cable itself. A CAT-6A cable terminated on CAT-6 keystones gives you a CAT-6 channel, not a CAT-6A one.

A Practical Middle Path

Many projects split the specification rather than choosing one for everything:

  • CAT-6A for backbone links, AP uplinks, camera trunks, and anything into the server room
  • CAT-6 for ordinary desk outlets where 1 Gbps is the realistic requirement

This puts the money where the bandwidth actually needs to go, instead of paying a premium on every outlet in the building.

Yes, as long as each individual channel is built consistently. Problems arise when categories are mixed within a single link — cable of one category with connectors of another. Keep each channel uniform.

Is shielded always better?

Only when it is installed and earthed correctly. In electrically noisy environments — factory floors, near heavy machinery, alongside power runs — shielded is a real advantage. In a normal office, unshielded that is properly installed usually performs just as well and is far more forgiving.

How do I know what I actually got?

Read the printed marking on the jacket — category, conductor type, and standard are printed along the cable. And insist on certification testing at handover rather than a simple continuity check. A cable tester that only confirms wire mapping tells you nothing about whether the channel meets its category.
