Single mode and multimode fiber look identical from the outside. The difference is inside the glass, and choosing the wrong one means either paying for capacity you will never use or hitting a distance wall halfway through a project. Here is the practical difference, without the physics lecture.
The core is the light-carrying centre of the fibre. Single mode has a very small core — around 9 microns — so light travels in essentially one straight path. Multimode has a much larger core, typically 50 or 62.5 microns, so light bounces along multiple paths.
Those multiple paths are exactly the problem. Different paths take slightly different times to reach the far end, which smears the signal. This is called modal dispersion, and it is why multimode has a distance limit that single mode does not share.

Single mode cable is generally cheaper than multimode, but single mode equipment is more expensive because it uses laser sources. Multimode flips this — cheaper optics, costlier cable.
The practical result: on short links with many ports, multimode can work out cheaper overall. On long links, single mode wins easily because you would need active equipment in between to make multimode reach at all.
Multimode is graded OM1 through OM5. Higher grades support higher bandwidth over longer distances.
Mixing grades on the same link causes loss at the joint. If you are extending an existing multimode run, find out what grade is already installed before ordering.
The trend across the industry has been toward single mode even for shorter links, because transceiver prices have fallen and the distance headroom removes a future problem.
Physically the connectors will mate, but the core mismatch causes heavy loss and the link will either fail or perform unreliably. If both types must coexist in one network, use media converters or matched transceivers at a defined boundary point rather than joining the fibres directly.
Splicing single mode demands tighter alignment because the core is smaller, so it is less forgiving of poor technique. With a properly maintained fusion splicer and a trained technician, it is routine work.
Single mode dominates outdoor, telecom, ISP, and campus backbone work. Multimode remains common inside data centres and in buildings with existing multimode equipment.
