Power over Ethernet made IP camera installation dramatically simpler — one cable carries both data and power, so no separate supply is needed at each camera. But PoE has limits, and most PoE problems in the field trace back to the cable rather than to the switch or the camera.
The Ethernet standard specifies a maximum channel length of 100 metres. In practice that is 90 metres of horizontal cable plus up to 10 metres of patch cords at both ends.
This is a data limit, based on signal timing, not on power. It applies whether or not PoE is used, and it is not a soft limit — exceeding it causes packet errors and unreliable links rather than a clean failure.
Power is a separate constraint. Voltage drops along the cable, so the camera at the far end receives less power than the switch sent. Both limits have to be respected.
Here is the point that catches people out. A cheap cable with undersized or non-copper conductors may still pass a basic data test at moderate length — but under PoE load it behaves very differently:
This is why copper-clad aluminium cable is a poor choice for PoE work regardless of what it costs. Aluminium conducts less well than copper, so the voltage drop and heating problems both worsen.
The night-time failure pattern is the most common and the most misdiagnosed. Installers replace the camera, then the switch, and the fault persists — because the fault is in the cable's ability to deliver current under load.
Beyond the channel limit, adding more cable does not help. The workable options are:

Not directly. IP cameras need twisted-pair networking cable, though converters exist to run Ethernet over existing coax where re-cabling is impractical. For new installations, run proper networking cable.
It can, but with less headroom than CAT-6 for both data and heat. For new installations, and especially for higher-power PoE devices, CAT-6 or above is the sensible baseline.
Cut a sample end and inspect the conductor — copper-clad aluminium shows a silver-white core beneath a thin copper layer. Also read the printed marking on the jacket, which should state the conductor material, and ask the supplier to confirm it in writing on the invoice.
