Power over Ethernet made IP camera installation dramatically simpler — one cable carries both data and power, so no separate supply is needed at each camera. But PoE has limits, and most PoE problems in the field trace back to the cable rather than to the switch or the camera.

The 100 Metre Rule and What It Really Means

The Ethernet standard specifies a maximum channel length of 100 metres. In practice that is 90 metres of horizontal cable plus up to 10 metres of patch cords at both ends.

This is a data limit, based on signal timing, not on power. It applies whether or not PoE is used, and it is not a soft limit — exceeding it causes packet errors and unreliable links rather than a clean failure.

Power is a separate constraint. Voltage drops along the cable, so the camera at the far end receives less power than the switch sent. Both limits have to be respected.

Why Conductor Quality Matters More With PoE

Here is the point that catches people out. A cheap cable with undersized or non-copper conductors may still pass a basic data test at moderate length — but under PoE load it behaves very differently:

  • Higher resistance means greater voltage drop, so the camera may not receive enough power
  • Higher resistance also means more heat generated inside the cable
  • In a tightly packed bundle, that heat accumulates and raises the temperature of every cable around it
  • Higher temperature increases resistance further, which increases heating — a loop that gets worse as more devices are powered

This is why copper-clad aluminium cable is a poor choice for PoE work regardless of what it costs. Aluminium conducts less well than copper, so the voltage drop and heating problems both worsen.

Symptoms of a PoE Cable Problem

  • Camera boots, runs for a while, then reboots — classic marginal power
  • Camera works during the day and drops at night when IR illuminators draw more current
  • Camera works when connected on a short test lead but not on the installed run
  • Several cameras on one switch work individually but fail when all are powered together
  • Intermittent packet loss that worsens in hot weather

The night-time failure pattern is the most common and the most misdiagnosed. Installers replace the camera, then the switch, and the fault persists — because the fault is in the cable's ability to deliver current under load.

Cable Selection Checklist for PoE

  • Solid copper conductors — not copper-clad aluminium, for any permanent horizontal run
  • Correct gauge — thicker conductors reduce both voltage drop and heat
  • Solid core for horizontal runs, stranded only for patch cords — stranded has higher resistance and is not intended for long fixed runs
  • Bundle size discipline — large tightly-packed bundles of powered cables trap heat; spread them out or reduce bundle count
  • Appropriate jacket — outdoor runs need UV-resistant jackets; direct burial needs proper construction, not indoor cable in a pipe

What to Do When the Distance Is Too Long

Beyond the channel limit, adding more cable does not help. The workable options are:

  • Add an intermediate switch — the most common solution; the link restarts from that point, but the switch needs power and weather protection
  • PoE extenders — repeat both data and power, but each stage adds loss and a failure point
  • Fiber plus media converter — the right answer for genuinely long runs; fiber has no distance problem and no electrical interference, with local power at the camera end
  • Local power at the camera — if mains is available at the camera position, the cable only has to carry data

For campus, warehouse, and industrial sites, fiber backbone with local switching has become the standard design precisely because it removes both the distance limit and the power-drop problem in one step.

Planning Advice That Saves Callbacks

  • Measure the actual cable route, not the straight-line distance — routes with vertical drops and detours are often far longer than expected
  • Leave margin; a design that works exactly at the limit will fail after any future change
  • Check the switch's total power budget, not just its per-port rating — a switch may support high power on one port but not on all ports simultaneously
  • Test at night with IR active, not just during commissioning in daylight
  • Document run lengths at handover so the next technician does not have to guess
